Well a number of inspections have taken place since my last update. In general the inspections have been normal with plenty of; bees, larvae and sealed brood. Minor numbers of drone cells and a small number of queen cells. There are no signs of any disease.
Hefting the supers leads me to think that I have got at least 50lbs of honey between the 3 x hives. Considering the late start to the year I think this is acceptable.
My home made super frames (without foundation) have been really successful and you have to look really close to distinguish them from the ones with normal foundation. They are at the very least as straight and neat as the normal ones. If they keep up the good work I will not be buying any more foundation and will gradually change over to all top-bar frames.
I have not checked either of the 2 x top-bar hives, but reports suggest that they are both ok with lots of bees coming and going.
Next week I shall take some honey off. I really cannot understand why some people leave all the supers on till the end of the season and continually lift them on and off every time they do an inspection..
