Hi there, I'm currently getting my new National hive ready for my first season as a beekeeper bnelefore I collect my bees from yourself.
Do you think it might be worthwhile while I am getting the hive ready prior to collecting the bees when ready to instal a hive heater in order to give the bees a helping hand through the winter.
I'm a bit of a gadget man and can instal a heater, solar pannel and 12v battery for about £30 with the only item in the hive would be the heater itself being about the size of a Blackberry mobile phone. The small solar pannel would be fixed to the roof and the 12v battery would be fixed to the hive stand.
In your oppinion is this something you would recomend or do you think it's not worth the effort and extra cost.

Hello
This is something that I've thought about but never got round to trying. This was partly my reason for thinking about a bee house. It seems to me that it is a good idea, but! You must stay well below 10 degrees C, otherwise the bees might be fooled into coming out for a cleansing flight when the outside temperature is well below 10 degrees with death being the probable result.
I believe that the bees are fine down to zero degrees so anything that stops the temperature going below zero would be more than adequate, but I am a relatively new bee keeper so Mike would be the oracle on this.
