Hi I now use only poly hives i find my bees do a lot better in poly compaired to wood The bees build up faster and overwinter better and use lest stores. The other good thing is there a lot lighter to move easy to clean with washing soda

I like my poly Hive as it is lighter and puts my back at less of a risk of injury. The Bees do start the season earlier, and appear to build up quicker.
On a negative note, they are not as easy to clean as a wooden Hive, and would be a nightmare to get rid of if they were found to have disease. (You can burn a wooden hive and bury the ash, but a poly Hive has to be broken up and placed in a thick plastic bag. It will not degrade during your life time, and remain infectious for a very long time.
I tried cleaning my Poly Hive by submerging it in a bath of Bleach and Washing Soda. However Poly floats (its the same stuff the floats are made out of in swimming baths. So is nearly impossible to clean.
The best I can do is steam clean the inner Hive and re-paint the outer surface. But if the colony caught AFB / EFB the inspector would want the Hive destroyed completely

Years ago at the time of the fireman's strike (I think it was 1972). I unfortunately set fire to my chimney. The strike meant that no fire engine came out. In desperation I got out a ladder and climbed on the roof with a hosepipe which I put down the chimney. The resulting deluge caused sparks to land in the hearth and then jump up in the air and make big burn marks in the polystyrene ceiling, also this was at a time when nylon carpets were all the rage (cheap and cheerful) it made a mess of the carpet as well. It seems funny now but at the time was quite frightening.
Polystyrene doesn't burn but it does melt , but in doing so it creates very obnoxious fumes. Maybe the heat of an incinerator would destroy it and the obnoxious fumes? If that is the case then maybe a big bonfire on 5th November etc would have the same result.
Probably the best bet is to put it in a yellow plastic bag and see if the local council will take it as controlled waste.
I had never really considered a poly hive but they sound interesting.
